Neighborhood Residence - Vancouver, WA
Located in an older, traditional section of downtown Vancouver, Washington, this home replaced the client's residence of 40 years. The design was heavily influenced by the desire to be able to view the owner's beautiful gardens and the need to fit in with surrounding modest homes. An old ginko tree formed the dominant entry statement for the new house.
Extensive use of floor-to-ceiling glazing and cantilevered roof structures allow the inside of the home to become part of the landscaping. Many of the existing shrubs were moved, temporarily replanted, and then re-deployed in new arrangements for the final yard work.
A warm glow from skylights and clerestory windows makes dining a pleasure. Light is brought into the house in many different ways which gives spaces unique character depending on the time of day and year.
